Wal-Mart shopping

Ok, I know. Not all of you are blessed to have a Publix nearby and must resort to Wal-Mart for your groceries. My condolences. Wal-Mart and other large chain stores *cough* Target *cough* are notoriously BAD for couponers. These stores have zero coupon training and if a coupon beeps for any reason they will start in on the pull-random-excuse-why-I-can't-take-your-coupon drama.

If you're limited to Wal-Mart, I have put together some good deals for you. A few tips for having a good Wal-Mart shopping experience.

1) Test the waters. When you have some time, put together a small list with a few different types of coupons to see what will happen. Get one that gives you overage, one that you are using on a trial-sized item that doesn't exclude trial sized items, one ip that will give you a free item, etc. Wait to see what happens. Go in with a smile on your face and expect to have answers. Be prepared to explain your coupons. KNOW YOUR STUFF! Because they won't.

2) Time to practice a little thing I like to call "Cashier profiling". Yes. I do it. Yes it works (mostly). Older women are a no-go. They like to scrutinize coupons. Young males are the best. They aren't careful, so make sure they scan them all, but generally, they'll push anything through. If there are no young males, go for a young female, but look for one who is smiling. Cashiers that are in a bad mood like to pawn that off on you. If you find a line with a young male, and you expect trouble, buy tampons. Or pads. It usually flusters them and they will just push it through so they don't have to ask any questions. LOL.

  2. I've tried the Knox q at wal-mart before with a young female cashier and she wouldn't take it. She basically gave me a lame excuse that bc it was going to give overage and that the picture showed something different then the gelatin she couldn't do it. When I explained it said any Knox she just said sorry. I only had bought one bc I was testing the waters and I wasn't in the mood to argue, so I just asked her to take it back. Not saying some others won't take them, just thought I would share my experience. I stick to my Publix now lol.

  3. ha. ha. I like the comment about buying pads or tampons with a young male cashier. Too true. I think they think we are like their mom or something.

  4. Katie- I know. I have been using the $3 Adams q's there and I always get nervous approaching the register. ack. So far I've only been denied one out of about 7 times, but I always get the look of what does this mean? ... But I save my Knox for Publix. :)

    Margery- ;)

  5. I did do the Rolaids overage deal at Walmart and it worked. The register beeped but the cashier didn't know why so pushed it through.
FYI, Silk Soymilk here in Nashville is $2.68. I was excited for a moment by the $2.08 mentioned above. This is the only thing I really go to Walmart for anymore. We don't drink cow's milk and that Soymilk really adds up, even with qs, and Walmart at $2.68 is a really good price. $2.99 is the Publix price.

  7. Colleen- we do soymilk too. I was so THRILLED when 8th Continent had the $2/1 coupon out I asked everyone I know to print them, so I have a bunch, and they don't expire until June of next year! :) btw, have you seen the Original Chocolate flavor 8th Continent anywhere? I'm on a mission to find it. It is so SO good and I can't find it anywhere. I've asked my Publix to order it, but I don't know how long that takes. :(

Mel- really? I bought them when I was there yesterday, they had tons, but the time before they only had one. I got it. Someone around here knows that good deal!

  8. Profiling: Laughed about the tampons! If I weren't pregnant I would be all over that, however I think that might fluster them even more!!

I actually have a favorite older lady at Publix. She asks that I put my coupons on the items so she can check them as we go and then she will scan them at the end. Turns out that works best with ALL cashiers! This also adds to my own credibility because certainly I wouldn't be so blaten as to try to do a coupon-fraud with the coupons right there on the items. I even made a special trip (or 3, she wasn't working the first 2 times) to visit my little old lady to show her the sonogram pictures and I think she was more excited than my own mother.

But I DO LOVE my college girls! There are 2 of them at my Publix I will search for. They LOVE to talk!!! and even though I will still put my coupons on the items, the half look at them and just keep chatting.

It is good to find your favorite cashiers. 1. they know you are being honest and not surprised when you have 75 coupons for 45 items. 2. they get to know you and are actually excited to learn from you at how you manage to save so much! 3. it is like visiting a friend instead of just going through a line.

BTW~ Your blog has become one of my 2 favorites.. EVER!

  9. Heather-LOL! I agree- my Publix cashiers ALL know me! I can spot a newbie as soon as I walk in! :)
They all ask after my kids and love seeing us (and my savings!) when I come in. It's awesome!
Thanks for reading, and all the compliments! :) And congrats on the new addition ;)
